Addicted to the Drama of it all!

Addiction isn’t just about substances, it’s about behaviours to!

The wild child, the flirt, the bully, the rebel….

When I was in treatment, I saw something amazing!  I saw individuals come through the doors for treatment of alcohol &/or drug addiction and they found it really easy to stop and didn’t have the usual struggles that alcoholics or drug addicts had when walking through the doors.

They didn’t have the shakes that seemed to last forever unable to write their own name for weeks, they didn’t seem to have a problem sleeping or the sick feeling that food or eating gives you, even the smell wanting to make you throw up.

They came in, took their medication and once they quickly started to feel human, the drama started!!

These were people that did not understand the devastation and rock bottom of addiction but were attracted and ‘addicted’ to the glamorous lifestyle they see on tv or the attention they got from their ‘boyfriend’ for covering for them!

They recovered from their addiction very quickly and then took on all the roles of the Drama Triangle: the Persecutor, the Victim and the Rescuer to impress other people in treatment, find a new belonging and continue their addictive behaviour from a better place and continue living out their fantasy.

This obviously doesn’t just happen in treatment, these behaviours can be just as shoplifting, sex and people may not realise till they stop and look back at their behaviour and why they were acting out.

These behaviours can be looked at as a result of nature or nurture, for example:

  • Nature, the endorphin rush to the brain (the feel-good chemicals) and people want that rush over and over, taking bigger and bigger risks to achieve it.
  • Nurture, the person who thinks sex is love, so they will sleep with anyone who shows them the slightest bit of attention as this has been missing from their life.

People can get wrapped in the drama and have a strong urge for their need to be met, this can lead to addiction.

There is another way out and that is to find out who you are, find your authentic self.
